My friend has an Etsy shop where is sells wood products he makes and he's been doing OK with it.     I got him to do some comparisons to ebay and he found the Etsy store would sell more of the same item.

It is a convenient way if you are a small business and don't want the hassle of a webshop for sure.

The ironic thing is he had a web hosting company business so he could have hosted it 100% but there seems to be some benefit from Etsy marketing your products for you.

Exactly. And I think they will take care of the payment part also.
(you can do that yourself too of course, but this is more convenient)
