I am able to see both video and the map on my android phone.  They are interchange able.  Have you tried to reinstall the App?

I installed the app 5 times and updated to the latest version

What Android device are you using?  I am on v1.2.0 of the App on a Samsung S4 phone.

sansung note 2  android 4.1.2

do you need to have the WiFi turned on  for the tablet or phone so it can get the real time map info? I have seen a post where people say turn off Bluetooth and WiFi on the viewing device to prevent interference is this true or is it acceptable to leave on ?

First you need a internet connection to cache the area in google maps you intend to fly. Once you have done this it's better to turn on Flightmode to minimize the interference(lag) between your bird and remote.
