I live in a very hilly area and often find that when taking off i cannot move very far because I run out of altitude.

Does anyone else ever get this problem?

Have you changed your max altitude in the settings?  You can enable up to 500m

It seems to max out at 120m (UK)

You'll get a warning about the legal heigh limit if you set above 120m but you agree and all is good.  I have mine set above 400ft already.
