We had already planned a week away for a long time, briefly in our own country towards the Ardennes.
The day on departure the weather was sunny, on arrival, barely 300km further from where we live, the weather turned a bit. But it was still warm and after dinner we were able to take a walk in the petoriske Durbuy.
There was nothing going on and all terraces were full, we could still enjoy a nice cocktail.
The next morning it did nothing but rain. Nevertheless we went out and visited the brewery of "la chouffe". After that we went to Coo to visit the falls.
I had been there several times but never had I seen them so fierce... They almost broke from the banks.
We were all wet, and the dog Miel, the Saint Bernard didn't mind.
On the way to our place of stay we heard on the radio that in Liege the water had started to come over the dikes. The water in the ourthe started to rise enormously.
That night, the waters overflowed their banks and several villages were flooded. The power of the water took everything with it...
Houses were flooded, some houses even threatened to collapse, cars washed away, people were missing and drowned... disaster.
Fortunately we were on a higher area, and could only watch as everything broke down.
The next morning, we went to have a look, the water flow had already decreased but most of the streets were still flooded.
Most people couldn't do anything yet, the fire brigade started to bring everything to safety and help the people. Heavy pumps drained the water in certain streets. Where a gruel of mud and rubble was left behind.
We were there on leave, and could do nothing, help was not allowed, for the sake of safety.
So there was not much to do, so let the bird in the air,...
While the clean-up was being done, heavy rain started again, the whole thing started again, a week after the first flood.
