Has anyone flown around or into the Grand Canyon? I know it is probably off limits but IT's a BIG Hole and can't fathom every square inch being monitored. How about the Indian side? What are their rules? Just asking as I am heading that way on vacation.

if it's a national park , forget it. I going to Utah parks and want footage. Can't. I guess I'll shoot some establishing shots with the Phantom 3 out side of the park and then do handheld & Gopro, in the park

Eh?   I see 100's of videos from folks flying over houses/people which I consider dangerous, but is apparently OK in the USA..

And you can't fly over rocks and rivers?

That's nuts, I tell ya..  Just nuts. ;-)

If that is true, there are plenty of areas where you could take off and land that aren't national park. There are lots of dirt roads that go east from Tusayan into forest service land where you can get to the rim without being in the park. Only a few miles from the tourist areas at the south rim.

Yeah, that looks to be true.  Here is the actual National Parks memorandum from last June (2014) that governs the situation.
Launching, landing, or operating the aircraft from within the parks is not permitted under normal circumstances.
