I wanted to do a shot like that as well but was scared that the lightning could strike my drone as it is higher than the surroundings, what is the chance of that happening?

Not likely, due to your drone is not grounded. Although the close by lighting's EMP might interfere with your drone's compass, GPS and IMU.  

Wow, pretty ominous storm ... I think I would have gone up too if I saw that formation...  nice capture!
