It does look the business from a distance. The word chateau ( or Château; to give the correct French spelling ) has no connection to cats or water of which I'm aware. The circumflex over a letter usually denotes the omission of an S after that letter (in old French) which would make it Chasteau (castle).
Now you might observe that in modern French - chasse d'eau is a toilet cistern (Tirez la chasse = pull the chain/flush the loo) Or there are many Châteaux d'eau (water towers) in France used to give a header pressure of water to serve the dwellings on the lower slopes. Not to be confused with the Château d'ô ) a real castle surrounded by a lake, in the Orne in northern France:
That is all very interesting, thanks.
What I know about French is about limited to Nege in la parc - snowing in the park.
What little French I have came from the French movies I watched - and the books (translated to English) of Marcel Pagnol.
But I love to play with words.... |
