Early morning at the sunflower strip......

Whilst driving up the A130 the other day I noticed this field of sunflowers,  they had previously been hidden by a corn field which has just been harvested.  The following morning I stopped in the adjacent layby and sent the drone in for a closer inspection.

To the right of the strip is a small house,  possibly the farm house so it might have just been to look nice.   Although Ive seen the same thing done recently around sweet corn where they grow a strip of corn,  and I dont dont really understand that one.

I think it's something to do with keeping insect predators away from a crop, possibly?

That would make sense if it was all around the crop,  but the one with the sweetcorn was just parallel with a road and footpath,   unless the predator was humans thieving...

I’m surprised they weren’t destroyed by the wind myself.

I think it could be done.   zoom in and mark off each one as you go with a little black brush in photoshop.

Sunflowers are known for being hearty and having thick stalks so even pounding rain doesn't seem to destroy them.

When ever Ive grown them they've always been blown over by the wind.    Maybe thats because I dont grow a field full and protect them with corn.

Could be a variety of things I guess. Depends on soil conditions, root depth and which variety of sunflower.  Sorry to hear that the wind was able to blow yours over.

I think next year I will try and grow a few again.   There have been some nice ones in peoples garden this year and they always give me a smile.

This is my favorite of all the sunflower breeds.  Really like the colors.
