[size=25.68000030517578px]Landguard Fort defends the approach to Harwich Harbour, a safe haven for shipping. It was the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England, by the Dutch in 1667, who were repulsed by the Royal Marines in their first land battle. The current fort was built in the 18th century, and modified in the 19th century, with substantial additional 19th and 20th-century outside batteries. It was manned through both World Wars and played an important anti-aircraft role during the Second World War. In 1951 two of the old gun casemates were converted into a 'Cold War' control room. The fort was disarmed and closed in 1956.

Thats cool and the history too.  Can you walk in it? Looks like no.

Yes you can go inside but it’s closed on Mondays which was the day I was there

I was there for another purpose so it was ok. Hoping to be back there in a couple of weeks but that will be another Monday again.

thanks Depp.   That part of the coast is being to lure me more and more,  not far for me but the roads are sooooo slow to get there.

Our rain has cleared this morning. Very heavy overnight and now we have a moderate wind and 10c.   I probably would have gone somewhere later but as Ive only got enough fuel for SHMBO'd trip to the dentist tomorrow I'll give it a miss today.

Hopefully heading back that way in a couple of weeks (if the petrol crisis has sorted it self out by then) so need to plan a couple of places to stop at on the way back.

Not only a fantastic fort but one with a lot of important history.
