This Folly was erected on Kerridge Edge, high above Bollington, on the Derbyshire/Cheshire border in 1817.
Its purpose was to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo, apparently.

It’s the vange no 5 well.  They sold the water on the a13 until they found out it was contained from the local mental home.

What a story!  Never heard of that before.  People still come to Buxton to drink from the well in the town centre. It's about 30 minutes from here. I've tasted it, but I wouldn't want to drink any quantity of it despite its supposed beneficial properties

As a kid more than 30 years ago we went to the lane district.  Some where in the mountains we stopped and drank the water from the stream.   To this day best water I’ve drunk.

Ahh.  We had gone to ulverstone to visit my aunt.   I even had time to fish for like in the ulveston canal.  I still have some of the lures I bought there in the loft.

You might have been up to Tarn Hows then. A small tarn or lake in the hills to the north of Conniston Water, above Ulverston. A popular walkers' destination.

Yes. That could have been it.  The canal I fished was called black drain.

The name is self-explanatory yet I still find it incredible how white it actually is... Nice capture

Oh yes.  My dad took me up there.  I think I was about 12/13.  He let me drive cross country towards York.  Lol. Those were the days.

Hi Peter. It's about 8-9 metres high. Originally was a one-room shelter with stone seats and a table. Bricked up long ago and is now just a prominent landmark

Yes it resembles a beehive - in fact one was painted on it a few years ago,
It has also been decorated for the Queen's Jubilee in 2012.

Rumour is, the Folly was named after the horse that hauled the capstone up that steep hill
