I contacted DJI support.  Only the DJI RC Pro will work with the Mavic 3, not the original SC.  Dang it.

This is completely unacceptable to spend $800 on a controller like that for it to be obsolete with the next release!  This is why I will be retuning my mavic 3 that I ordered today!

Bad strategy from DJI.

Bad for the planet with one new device for each mavic (crystalsky, smartcontroller and now a new smart v2)

Thats terrible news.

And I see it doesn't support other AC yet either,  so we would have to wait for future upgrades to see if it will.

Sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. Before we launch out Mavic 3, we have already tested the compatibility between DJI Smart Controller and Mavic 3. Since the hardware of DJI Smart Controller can not support all the image transmission system requirements of Mavic 3, we can not guarantee that the actual effect of DJI Smart Controller's image transmission will be as good and stable as that of RC Pro, also the new function, 4G image transmission. Thus, DJI Smart Controller does not support use together with Mavic 3 for now. Thanks for your understanding.

Finding your reply confusing - does that mean the old controller may support the Mavic 3 Pro at a later date with lower image transmission?
See no reason why not as the Air 2s is supported which uses O3.

Was looking to upgrade my Mavic 2 Pro, but cost and more importantly no classification for new rules in Europe and UK in Jan 2023 means its a no for me. Will wait it out until at least early 2023

I am on the fence too.  I am not going to spend another $3000 for something that cannot be used with the smart controller I already own.  I am sticking with my Mavic 2 Pro for now.

This craft ought not have been released with the expectation people would buy it having to use something other than the GREAT Smart Controller.  I wont consider upgrading unless or until the Smart Controller can be used.  Release without it is absurd!

I was ready to buy the mavic 3 until I found out it was not compatible with the Smart Controller I bought for $800 last year. DJI should at least offer all of us a trade in for the new controller!!! Or make it work .. everyone please make this request known to DJI. THEY SHOULD DO THIS FOR THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS. I have 3 DJI drones. I was hoping to get this one

I hope it does too.  The stock controller with the M3 is the same as mini 2 and air2s.  I bet the new upgrade will allow it for out SC V1
