I dont bust peoples balls about distance flying so much, but flying up above 400 feet I have always felt is much much more dangerous and reckless on the part of drone pilots. If you are at 200 foot altitude and are flying out over the ocean for 4 miles, or out over a wooded area, the worst case scenario here is that you lose your drone somehow, and it crashes into the ocean or a tree. However, when you start flying up in altitude the worst case scenario there is you fly up and collide with a manned aircraft, cause an accident, and people die. I never get nervous regarding distance, but altitude that exceeds 400ft to me always makes me nervous because of the risk. All we need is for one idiot to have a drone up way over limit and cause an accident, and you would have a massive power grab from the government that will clamp down severely on drone usage. This is why I will chastise people for flying above 400ft. (unless where legally excepted, as there are exceptions provided under FAA Rule where 400ft can be exceeded by a drone)
I live out in the country, and most all my flying is over nothing but woods. However, I do have an air force base that is like 45 miles away. I routinely have military aircraft fly over my property, and I have seen them come over my property many times at altitudes below 1000 feet. I swear many times they appear to be just above the tree line. I have always had this nightmare in my mind of being out with my drone when they come buzzing by. If I was up over 400ft at one of these moments I could easily collide with them. These folks who fly up into the clouds and stuff are risking a lot, and threatening our hobby severely. All it will take is one accident and we will see drones become so regulated that many of us may not even be able to continue in the hobby. |
