I just got got my Air 2S yesterday, charged all the batteries and updated all the firmware etc.

Took it for a wee test flight in the garden earlier and it keeps popping up that I need a network connection but I have no idea why, i've checked and rechecked and all firmware etc is up to date. I have never required a network connection for my Mini 2. I've been through the manual but can't see why I would need a network connection.

Are there any features that actually require an internet connection?

To register the drone with DJI. You will only need it once.

Yes I have done that.

Hello there stupat78. I am sorry for the trouble this has caused and thank you for reaching out. May we please know what is the model of the mobile device that you are using please and kindly please try to uninstall and reinstall the DJI Fly application ( https://www.dji.com/downloads/djiapp/dji-fly ) for us to be able to isolate the said issue? In addition, kindly please sync all of your flight records before uninstalling the DJI Fly application on your mobile device for you not to loose your previous flight information and kindly please post a photo showing the said error message as well. Thank you.

I have never such a message from the DJI app. Are you sure it is coming from that app? Try closing all other apps.
