Hi,

Just got my Mini 2 tangled up in a tree branch on my second flight, tumbled to the ground, gimble broken. I stupidly didn't register for care refresh yet. I work in robotics so can do some repairs myself. What's my best option? Can I start care refresh and send it in?

Turns out I do have care refresh, and I have opted for express, so £45 for a replacement. I'll call that idiot tax.

Is that £45 from DJI to replace it?

I would suggest your next flights be low and slow in a wide open space, being unfamiliar with a drone and near trees is not a good combination.

I mean, we all know that's what we should be doing, sure. But wouldn't the light through those trees make a lovely shot?

Yes it would but until you are familiar with the drone do you not think it was an expensive shot?

There's a bend on, I think, the A5 in North Wales and 30 odd years ago I happened on it in the right light and at the right time and simply had to stop and look. All the trees along the valley  running away from me were in full Autumn 'plumage' and lit by a golden sun from behind me.

Good thing you have Care refresh.
Next time fly in an open space until you master the drone enough to try something more risky.
They have a habit to break down when impacting something other than air molecules.

I did buy it with the first drone,  but the second Mavic 2 and the Mini I didnt feel like I needed it.

I think once you’ve learned to fly you don’t really need it.

Yes, first you pay for Care Refresh and then for the repair itself (and the second repair is even more expensive)
I know it is not as much as a drone, but it is a start.
And only valid for 12 months (depending on the plan you choose)
So for a M3 first replacement you pay 239 + 159
But it does not cover fly aways....
And that is probably the most common.
Plus it does require you to retrieve the drone. Which is not always possible.
So......
Not worth it for me.

Insurance is only needed for things you can't afford to have done, but you do need to get done.

As far as I know it is not free for any of their applicable drones, unless perhaps you are thinking of a flyaway caused by an equipment malfunction and their perhaps considering it a warranty issue.

Flyaway coverage is available for most Mavic drones that use the Fly app. However you must have the drone bound to the remote and account. It is a separate replacement charge of several times the Care Refresh replacement fee to use if you need a replacement. My M3 is bound to my remote and account according to the app. The Flyaway replacement cost to me is $739. Care Refresh replacement cost to me is $159/$199 (1st/2nd). You must provide flight log files after loss to use this service.
I always used one remote for my Ma2 and A2s so I had to always rebind the one I was using before flights. Now I have dedicated remotes, no longer needed.
