The Stevenson Screen is a ventilated enclosure for meteorological instruments.
Early versions required a meteorologist to visit and take readings daily.
Modern versions, like this one at Buxton, send their data electronically to the Met. Office.

Gosh you dont see many of these around any more,     That one looks a bit high though.

I saw another older one a bit back - but I can't remember where.
They're usually about shoulder height - as was this one.
There was one in our school grounds, as I recall (long ago).

I've just remembered - it was a Chatsworth House. About half an hour from here.
We visited in September last year.

Last I saw temperature is supposed to be measured at 1.2m elevation which is why I thought it looked a bit high.

Tatton Park, just south of Manchester, is much better for floral shows.
At Chatsworth, we parked in Baslow and walked the 3 miles through the park to Chatsworth.
Didn't visit the house that time, but had a decent lunch in the adjacent Garden Centre/ restaurant.

I recall it was a long day for her driving to get her mum and then heading up there and back.   Dont think she really enjoyed that day very much.

It would certainly be a trek from down there. An overnight stay would have been preferable.  It's just started snowing again here.
