I have a boat at a marnina, and I've been practicing all kinds of photography practices and techniques.  I'm trying to up my game from just sending the drone up and shooting auto pictures, to taking actual good pictures, and post production techniques as well.

The is one of the results of my efforts.

Pueblo Reservoir, located in Colorado.  There are 2 marinas, and this is "North Shore".

Using this "feature" was a fad a couple of years ago when DJI introduced it.
But that soon died away.
I never understood the appeal of the technique in drone photography and haven't seen any examples that looked better than normal drone shots.
That example doesn't change my opinion.

I'm not certain I care for this technique, but I did want to try it and have it in my toolchest.

It probably has a use, and I hope I understand well enough how to implement it, but I bet I don't do many more of these.

The video really does implement it well.  I kind of fall in the Labroides camp, I'm not necessarily a fan of it.  But I want to expand my knowledge to include many techniques and capabilities.  I think it's cool that it exists and I didn't know about it 48 hours ago.  Not sure I will use it much myself.

agreed it sorta came and went several years back and to be honest, i never saw a use for it with photos.   but for your "playground" it would be appropriate to make a video showing the boats coming and going to the docks at the height of activity....toy boats would be the idea.  tilt shift video works best when you speed it up, for example:

another tilt shift video, i actually like it:

for our dr fans, how to do it; either video:

I have been using Adobe products for my post processing.  I have got some open source programs, but the one online photography class I am using employs Adobe.  So its Adobe for now.

I have done tilt-shift with the obligatory iPhone apps and always thought they were fun and different.  I never thought about doing this with a drone shot!  I may try and do this for a shot of my house and see how that comes out.  Thank you for sharing!

Gotcha.
A word of caution: the real-life T/S lenses produce rectilinear, not elliptical, areas of sharpness, so while I do like your effect, it's pretty obvious it's post-production.
Nice work otherwise!

Interesting...  so this is really a lens effect, for which the "ideal" approach would be to mimic the effect in post?

I am guessing the physical approach would be circular and centered?

The tilt/shift effect is used in view cameras to tilt or shift the lens so it is not parallel and in line with the film plane.
https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/tachihara.htm

You can buy expensive, specialised tilt/shift lenses for SLR cameras too.
https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/movements.htm

The effect you've played with isn't good for much more than creating a toy cars gimmick effect with a subject in focus surrounded by blurry nothing.
The main use of tilt/shift lenses is to alter the plane of focus to control perspective and/or to bring more of the image into focus than would possible with a regular lens.
This is particularly useful in architectural and landscape photography etc.

Uhm, no. The real T/S lens would produce planar effect, not circular/elliptical. The way it works it really tilts and/or shifts. There’s nothing circular about it, it moves the focus plane.

Nice photo.

My constructive feedback would be to not use a radial blur and use a linear one. You're trying to replicate the focal plane which a lens creates, which would have a long strip of in-focus area, not a circle.

Lol, good one.
I did you few T/S lenses IRL. Like many specialty tools, they have very narrow areas of application, and with the advances of digital post-processing software kinda lose their appeal. It’s totally understandable they were all the rage in film days, but today, when you can achieve that effect in 5 seconds in post, it’s really more of a nuisance.
