Aloha Tasos,
Good job on the video! The subject matter is very interesting. Very much like "a day in the life!" I wish I could read Greek!
The site was first inhabited after the Catastrophe of 1922, when refugees from Asia Minor arrived: about 800 families, who built makeshift houses (with lawns, planks and bricks) on a 30-acre hill, where an abandoned quarry stood. As most of these families came from Antalya, Attaliotika prevailed as the original name of the district. In a series of articles in the Athenian press from the 1920s until the time of Alexandrakis's film, Asyrmatos emerged as one of the capital's most degraded neighborhoods: a slum full of barefoot children and oil lamps, where rubbish had to be taken out. its limits and the water to be transferred to the hands, through impassable paths. Things changed, but at a slow pace. First was the fire of 1944 during the December Revolution, which destroyed not only the War School, but also some houses. And then there were the actions of Queen Federick in the 1950s. On her initiative, that is, the hewn stones from the then demolished War School were reused for the construction of 170 houses, which in 1956 undertook to house the population of Asyrmatos. |
