A day out in Congleton led us up the hill from the shopping centre, to this impressive building.
The name on the front immediately struck a chord from a childhood nursery rhyme:

Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?
The king was in his
counting house counting out his money,
The queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey
The maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes,
When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose!

Fitting - the song hasn't made it over the Channel though.

It's a historical reference to pirates

'Sing a Song of Sixpence' was apparently a coded message used by the legendary pirate captain Blackbeard to recruit pirates. Sixpence and a hipflask of rye whisky was the weekly pirate's wage. The 'blackbirds' were blackbeard's pirates and the 'pie' his ship.

Neither did I.

Just guess to show the brain washing that were susceptible to as kids... That rhyme could have been about anything and we'd all have had it implanted.

Blackbeard returns and suddenly am the kids follow him of to sea, like some bearded pied Piper, and we have no idea why were following him...

Could be seen as kinda sinister.

I looked it up. Originally a pub (The Moreton Arms) then a bank for 120 years, before lying empty for a while until Wetherspoons revived it.

Yes the characteristically Tudor design is still popular today. Homes are still constructed in a "mock" Tudor style.

The Moretons are the family who own(ed) Little Moreton Hall, a little further away.
A National Trust property now, I think.

Well it is easy to see why is was so popular.  Over the years of my travels I have seen a few homes in a somewhat tudor design.

Depends how many drinks you had in there, before leaving
I had to retreat downhill a distance to fit it all in - so the angle is upward.

To be “three sheets to the wind” is to be drunk. The sheet is the line that controls the sails on a yacht or sailing ship.. If the line is not secured, the sail flops in the wind, and the ship loses headway and control. If all three sails are loose, the ship is out of control.
