I was asked if i could take some aerial photos of an acquaintance house. "No problem," I said, "perhaps you might like to fly the drone and take the shots."
"Sounds like fun," he replied.
The old Mavic Pro has a dual control feature and I thought it would be a good time to make use of a spare controller I had.
David, the helicopter pilot watched as i navigated the Mavic through a maze of huge mature trees and out into the clear field beyond.
It took David, just seconds to understand the controls, having watched me.
I must admit, i was nervous and watched what he was doing as he approached a massive tree crown. Before I could override his stick movement, the drone detected the tree and stopped.
He was surprised at the warning beep and watched as I put the drone in a straight up climb so as to safely sort out the drama.
Morel of the story is, even experienced helicopter pilots can crash a drone, without training.
The dual control worked well, even though in this case, it was the drone's sensors that saved it.
I don't reckon the drone would have been recoverable from the tree.
