Hi. Welcome to the forum. Glad to help. What the drone does, guided by me, is fly to a chosen spot, then hovers there at the desired altitude (50 metres in this case). At this point I activate a feature of the Flight App (Litchi, in this case) which programs the drone to take a series of pictures in a vertical sequence, from an upward angle of 30 degrees, down to the nadir (vertically downwards.) It then rotates a little, and repeats until it has completed a 360 degree rotation. In this case 81 shots were taken over about a 5 minute period. These pictures now have to be "stitched" together by another piece of software.
I use the free App Autopano Giga by Kronos. The output is a flat jpg which looks weird, but that can generate a panorama like you see here when viewed with a panorama viewer (FSPviewer is free) or on Skypixel, where they are uploaded. The drone used is a Mavic Mini One.
I believe later models like the Mini2 or Air2s may have the feature built into their App, but you would have to check.
Hi again Bleriot, Much thanks for your very helpful reply. I have (on ground) panorama shooting, stitching and projections experience, so I could follow all you wrote. Ever since I saw my first satellite image (1975), I was entranced by the vertical view (of Australia) and worked with it for 28 years. My working life would have been very much happier and productive if drones were available for ground truth back then. I plan to buy a DJI Mini 2 or 3, if the latter is released soon. I just want to enjoy the vertical view of landscapes and their natural and man-made patterns. Thanks again for your help. Cheers Roofrack.
