One thing I never really dove into was the whole network business.
Sometimes I wish I did, but then again, you can't know everything well!
I used to have a very niche job, it involved being the cross over between the chimneys, most big companies will have people that only do networks, or firewalls, or manage databases (backups/indexes/migrations) or developers and so on. IBM was the worst company I worked for this.
Anyway, when there is an issue/performace problem/outage you need someone who can look at the code, diagnose the database, get the network guys to run traces etc and then put all that information back together to come up with a plan/solution. Paid well, was very challenging at times, but also very niche, most places I worked only ever had one or two people that would fall into that category and would be given the access to the various environments to be able to be effective. Seperations of duties is a real pain sometimes. |
