Trying to convince MIL that she should have some sort of fall detector but she's not having any of it,  especially as her brother just had a fall and had no help for some hours.

Yes, independence is a hard thing to relinquish. Let's hope common sense prevails - especially after her recent mishap.

cloud fare does load balancing and caching so the websites dont need such large infrastructure,  it also makes it easy to move backend services between locations or even countries.

One thing I never really dove into was the whole network business.
Sometimes I wish I did, but then again, you can't know everything well!

I used to have a very niche job,   it involved being the cross over between the chimneys,   most big companies will have people that only do networks,  or firewalls, or manage databases (backups/indexes/migrations) or developers and so on.   IBM was the worst company I worked for this.   

Anyway,  when there is an issue/performace problem/outage you need someone who can look at the code,   diagnose the database,  get the network guys to run traces etc and then put all that information back together to come up with a plan/solution.      Paid well,   was very challenging at times,  but also very niche,  most places I worked only ever had one or two people that would fall into that category and would be given the access to the various environments to be able to be effective.  Seperations of duties is a real pain sometimes.

Looks like you found a good niche indeed.
I have not had too much separation where I worked fortunately.
But there was one exception with one of my clients.
It was a real pain to work there. When I had access to one thing, the other thing was lacking and vice versa.

We have some great rules here for separation of duties.  with yearly SOX audits and if you work in or near banking then you have to take a 2 week continuous vacation,   which is supposed to show up if you are fiddling.

So far I only applied at a bigger company once, but found out it was not my cup of tea.

Some a definitely better than others,    I didnt like the management when I worked at IBM,   especially when we had to log our time in 15 minute increments to various projects and there was so much back stabbing.

Oh no. That sounds ugly.
I applied at Maersk before I got my first job. But did not like the atmosphere there
