As a Southern Hemisphere viewer, I would guess that this the Mediterranean Sea, and the landscape was Greece, or thereabouts. Greece, because of the ocean clarity suggests a low rainfall landscape with no out flowing turbid rivers and that the landscape rock is limestone - highly calcareous which precipitates any clay particles. The landscape and signs of human activity are sparse and indicate failure of crops but not isolated trees - olives? This is not to detract from the natural beauty of the scene. It just seems adds to the puzzle of how so much of human intellectual and artistic contribution came from this rocky and barren landscape. |
