I was quite relieved to see them there, they also have Mavic 1 batteries too so theres a good chance they will be around a bit longer,  especially now as DJI stopped selling them.

I've made a note.

Thanks RDB. Yes the one which was removed was in a particularly boggy patch of land. Maybe that contributed to its demise.

Yeah, really sad as I'm sure it had been around for a long time.  They don't get trunks that big overnight after all.

All I know his name is Charlie,  Ever year I have to remove him from a large concrete dish,  (about 1metre across) and I give him a clean and an oil.

Fine by me.      All I know is he's heavy and awkward to carry.  He gets caught up in the grape vine on route if you carry him too high.

I dont like to get the oil in the water,  and I like to bring him inside to dry for a few days first.

No doubt about that.    I have several older oaks on the northwest corner of my acreage and they have huge trunks.  One of these days I should measure the circumference of the trunks.  The sad thing with oaks is they tend to be lightning attractors.

I know just such a tree - a blasted oak.  Its remains are in a field not far from the landslip works I'm monitoring.  I'll get a pic next time I'm up there.

That would be cool to see but don't make a special trip.  With the price of petrol these days you have to be a bit more careful when planning trips.  I have been trying to combine trips lately but not always successful.  No mass transit nearby so it's either eBike or car.

For a semi-rural community we do have good transport links to the bigger towns and cities.
Yes the free bus pass is a perk - along with "Every Day's a Holiday"

Yes, when you see something that has stood for three centuries cut down, it's a sobering thought.
You can probably thank the squirrels for the self-seeded new oaks.  They bury so many acorns they can't remember where they all are ( or get eaten by foxes before they can dig 'em all up  )

Yeah, back in the time of the battle of Trafalgar, whole forests were cut down for the navy.
All mature oaks maybe hundreds of years old.
