Every year in early spring the herring run from north to south along the eastern coast of Vancouver island. The herring spawn is a singularly spectacular, sensory overload also attended by those who feed on the herring and their eggs. Female herring come close to shore to deposit their eggs on eelgrass and kelp while the males release their sperm transforming swaps of ocean to a frothy turquoise.

As the herring run along the coast, zonal fisheries openings and closings arrive with little to no notice and can last a few hours or a few days. The herring fleet has only a few short hours to fulfill their quotas before following the herring southwards to the next zone.

This video was taken by a DJI mini2 drone interspersed with some photos/video from a canon SX 70. Drone video was shot at Qualicum  on Vancouver Island. Photos captured near the Little River ferry terminal in the Comox Valley on Vancouver island.

Thank you Fred Fred Fred ! You can’t always catch it, but when you do, it’s pretty awesome! We use an app to keep a close watch on in the ships that are crowding into the Marina and when they leave, so do we!
