I think it was safe to do with previous Mavics, i.e. Mavic Pro or Mavic 2 Pro maybe as I think there used to be even accessories for holding the drone folded in the hands for using it as a stationary camera replacement. But imho it seems it has changed with Mavic 3 because the bottom legs rub against the gimbal restricting its movement. I suspect it's safer to unfold it to give the gimbal the breathing space even though they seem to have removed gimbal initialization with Mavic 3 on startup now, if you tilt the drone while moving it or place it on uneven surface, it may require gimbal to also titl, but it will get stuck rubbing against bottom arm(s). Not 100% sure, but I think maybe the safest would be to unfold it.
