As some of you might recall, I recently started to venture farther away from my homestead for the sunset shots.
You might also recall that I started visiting an area called Sunset Hills located about a mile away, which features a small body of water called Bard Lake.
I have got into my head that I want to take sunset pictures from above that lake.
Distance-wise it's ok, as it's less than two miles away.
But the real obstacle was that the lake is located behind a 500+ft hill. Naturally, there was no way I could control the drone from my driveway through that mass of rock.
Today I reckoned the sunset would be at least B-, so I started a bit earlier than usual, drove to the hill, hiked to the top (for some reason "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel comes to mind), set up a folding chair and went about flying and shooting.
For this first outing, my primary goals were to see if the whole thing is at all possible. And if it was, to recon some angles and spots.
The main concern was the control, as the hill is pretty steep on the lakeside and I was not sure I would have a line of sight.
Luckily I quickly found the spot I recalled from my prior visits that provided me with enough visibility.
All in all, the sunset turned out to be a solid B, I didn't drown my drone (even though lost control at one point and had to rely on good old RTH to regain it) and even came back with some pictures.
Below are a few frames from tonight.
