Wind is very good about getting things dried out. Growing up on a farm twice a year we had to remove any old and/or brown undergrowth along perimeter lines to keep fires from starting or spreading. Was quite the chore as it usually scared up a few rattlesnakes in the process. One year during the clean up I stepped on something that I thought was a fallen branch but when I looked down I saw it was a rattlesnake and he he was rattling his tail like crazy. My foot was holding his head down just enough so he couldn't turn or move. Nobody else was nearby so thinking quickly I pull my pistol out of the holster. Then I got to thinking if I shoot and miss I'll blow a hole through my foot. Had to take a deep breath and holding the pistol in both hands get off a shot. Missed. Now I'm needing to change underwear. 2nd shot was spot on his head. Turns out he was only a 4 footer but from the loudness of his rattle you'd have thought he was a 10 footer. From then on I started to practice shooting weekly.
The other part of the story was I had a machete in a scabbard on my right leg to be used for cutting underbrush when needed but I never thought about using it to try and cut off the snake's head. I remember my dad telling me that if I had tried to bend over and cut the snake's head off I may have released some of the downward pressure on the snake in the process. So kind of glad I opted for the pistol.
Sorry, long story. |
