Sounds like the ship was providing a lively entertainment that evening.  Light shows is always a big bonus.

I was actually onboard the USS Kearsarge during Operation Noble Obelisk when we conducted the evacuation of civilians from Sierra Leone in 1997.  Most of the Navy ships I was on were aircraft carriers.   I served onboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and USS George Washington (CVN 73).
Nothing like being onboard a "floating city" where over 14,500 meals are served daily.
