Have you ever wondered why cattle follow each other?  From my years on the farm I discovered there is a pecking order in a herd just like there is in a herd of wild horses.  Usually it is the oldest or strongest and most dominant cow.  When it is time to graze or go for water the leader always comes to the front and leads.  If you are feeding them in a corral the leader and older cows tend to eat first and then walk off so the younger ones can feed.  Almost like some type of social order.

I was told by an old school veterinarian that they have a social order and based on instinct they are able to sort it out.  You'd think a bull would be the leader but not always so.  Normally it is the eldest female.  If the cows get scared and start running the leader will always advance to get to the front of the herd.

So to move the herd all you need to do is move the leader and the rest will follow.

I going to have to be more observant next time I see them on the move and see if they behave the same way.

Well, there you go.  You're a farmer on a small scale.  Homegrown veggies are always fresher and better for you than store bought.

Problem is they often all come at once,  I have 6 marrows sitting on the counter that are ready and we only just finished one the other night.

You might have to set up a small neighborhood farmer's market then and sell the excess marrows (or zucchinis as we call them) and other excess veggies that you grow.  A lady did that about 4 miles down the road from me and she does quite well at it.

Curious other countries that use zucchini are for the smaller version which we call courgette.
