That's not soo stupid. It worked with the Mini 2. I always used to throw it in the air and so I did with the Mini 3 Pro. Luckily it fell into the grass and not onto concrete.
So, it's stupid expecting this trick to work with a new drone, but on the other hand I completely understand what happened.

Interesting find Bashy.    That pilot should have read the manual while he was in lockdown before attempting that maiden flight.

I too understand how it happened but not why it happened, not many of DJI drones do it so to expect it from a new drone is a bit steep, it was one of the big let downs for me but not a deal breaker, but i did ask about it before i bought the drone. We all know the meaning of "assume".
