It's a little more formal than more familiar terms such as "Cheers mate!"  or "Thanks a lot!"

No, it's still in use.
If you want a REALLY archaic expression:
" I am beholden to Thee"  
But that really IS obsolete

This is really archaic, because I've never heard of that term (maybe I did, but I didn't even notice).
