I just had an incident where my iPhone 13 Pro was locked up by the DJI Controller for my Mini 2.  The sequence went like this:

  • Connected my iPhone to the controller, and powered up the drone. I wasn't actually flying but just looking at settings for my drone.
  • Powered off just the drone.
  • Left the controller connected to my phone until the controller began beeping because no drone was connected.
  • Powered off the controller.
  • At this time my iPhone 13 Pro locked up hard and acted like it was bricked.  I had to do a force reset (press volume up then volume down then hold power) which brought it back to life.

I also note that I have controller charging enabled, so the controller charges my iPhone when connected. I'm wondering if powering the controller off while the phone was attached caused this in some way.

Just tried powering off the controller while the iPhone was connected again and it didn't lock up this time.

Just curious if this is a one-off or a new issue, perhaps with the latest iOS 16 which was recently released.

Either way, a very helpful thing to remember is how to force-reset the newer iPhones, which is quick press of volume up them volume down, followed by holding the power button until the Apple logo appears. Had this happened to me while I was out in the field flying I would never have known how to get my phone functioning again until I could Google it. Definitely something important to know.

Probably the DJI Fly App crashed or it went into a loop, preventing any input from the touchscreen. Did you try to swipe up from the bottom of the screen ? This action should show all the open apps, allowing you to force exit them.

The device was locked up hard. It would not power off or on, nor respond when plugging into external power. I've never had it lock up like that before. Screen was totally dark.

Hello there daneast. I am sorry for the trouble this has caused and thank you for reaching out. Kindly please try to uninstall an reinstall the DJI Fly application ( https://www.dji.com/dji-fly ) on the mobile device ( iPhone 13 Pro ) to see if the issue will still persist? In addition, please sync all of your flight records before uninstalling the DJI Fly application on your mobile device for you not to loose your previous flight information. If the issue persist kindly please try using a different recommended mobile device for us to be able to isolate the issue. Thank you.

This just happened to me and thanks to this post I was able to reset 2 New iPhones 14 pros on iOS 16.0.2.
I was flying my Mavic Air 2 as usual, turned off the drone, left it connected to the controller and BAM! No reaction from the phone at all... since I was on a job, I was able to get my gf's iPhone, get the app downloaded, flew again.... and it happened to that one too!

Didn't know about the hard reset until just now that I googled it and found this post!

I was ready to go to the apple store and return these phones LOL

Glad that worked for you too. It does look like there is some issue between the DJI controller and iPhones now, maybe related to version 16.0.2 which I'm also on.  I haven't had this happen to me again yet, but I tend to use my iPad with the controller.  Since it is an older iPad it's limited to 15.7.  The iPad has not had any problems.

Also this reset method just restarts the phone basically - it does not wipe it or anything like that.

This just happened to me and it scare me $hitless, In the 3 years I've own my phone it had never done that. I'm on a iPhone 11 Pro Max iOS 16.0.3. Controller was not in charging mode, this is a very serious issue and need to be address ASAP. Good thing i wasn't flying at the time.

Man, this happened just now. My mini 2 flew into a wall by itself and broke the gimbal (not related but some context). I left my dad's iPhone 12 plugged into the RC-C5 to try and find the flight log (no luck) with the controller running as I went to my computer to see what the heck could've caused this. Came back to the controller beeping and turned it off. The next thing I know, I am returning the phone to my dad and it is bricked. It is fine after a forced restart as you guys have previously mentioned but WHAT THE HECK IS CAUSING THIS??? This is a serious issue because there could be some problems in the future where the RC maybe can fully brick the phone and have to hard reset the phone. This needs to be fixed at all costs.

Was your controller beeping the warning it was about to turn off because it wasn't being used?

Was your controller beeping the warning it was about to turn off because it wasn't being used?

If your iPhone is stuck on the Lock Screen, I can imagine how frustrating that must be. You’re just trying to get to your apps, and it’s like your phone decided to freeze right at the worst moment. But don’t worry, there are a few things you can try to get it unstuck.
First up, the old faithful: force restarting your iPhone. It’s like the magic reset button for situations like this. Depending on your iPhone model, you’ll need to quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then do the same with the Volume Down button, and finally hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo. It might take a few seconds, so don’t let go too soon.
If the force restart doesn’t do the trick, there’s always the option of connecting your iPhone to a computer. Use a Lightning cable and plug it into your Mac or PC, then launch Finder (on macOS) or iTunes (on Windows). Sometimes, just connecting to a computer can help your iPhone snap out of whatever glitch it’s stuck in. If it prompts you to update or restore your device, choose Update to keep your data intact.
Another thing to check is if the screen is unresponsive due to a physical issue, like a crack or water damage. If that’s the case, you might need to get it looked at by a professional. But let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

If you have problem persist after trying these solution, you can follow for more details instruction below.
