Nice to hear you were able to get a flight in.  The weekend forecast here looks a bit promising but I'm not going to bank on it until closer to the weekend.

Yeah, my brother in law's house to be is going into the next phase of construction.

I just saw the shots you posted.  That is going to be quite a bit of construction going on.  Looks like a lovely neighborhood also.

   No doubt about which project will take the longest.  Hopefully, they get the construction weathered in before winter weather hits.

Well, I'm sure they have contingency plans in place so as to not have any damaged construction material caused by the winter weather.

This project is very loose, so I really have no idea.
They want to do a lot themselves, but that (obviously) takes much longer and there are a lot of variables that will impact the 'planning'.
I have stopped asking and just help when I can + document some of it.

It's really nice that they desire to do a lot of the work themselves.  However, with time constraints on how much time they can devote to the project will hamper the finish time for sure.  

Going to be a good project to document as they move through the various phases of construction.

Yeah, I both admire their flexible approach, and don't like their lack of proper planning.
But you can't have both I guess.

Unfortunately, lack of proper planning can get costly in both time and materials.  I hope it works out the best for them.

Yeah, it for sure can.
And it will be both good and bad for them.
He has a company that reclaims from demolitions and that means the more time he has, the more materials he can gather.
But prices have gone up too.

The thing that really gets me is how much money the oil producing companies are making.  The Big 3 here in the states keeping showing record level profit quarter after quarter.  I know it is expensive to research, drill, refine and transport the final products but there has to be an astronomical mark-up.

Diesel just went to $5.29 a gallon here.  I only know that because one of my son-in-laws has a 1 ton diesel truck that he uses to pull all his marine construction trailers around with.  I told him to starting looking at some of the new EV trucks.  He says from what he has read that they don't have as much pulling/towing power.

That's for sure.  EVs should be a good way but now that batteries are only lasting around 8 years they will be a bunch of batteries to worry about recycling and all their chemical contents.  We really need to find something greener and more sustainable for a much longer term.

I read an article on this.  Appears there are 3 reasons it hasn't caught on.

1 - If it is grey, it pollutes.  If it is not produced using renewable sources, hydrogen pollutes. To date, more than 96% of the hydrogen used is grey.  (The biggest challenge is to produce clean hydrogen at an affordable cost,)

2 - Hydrogen is a difficult gas to handle because, having a low volumetric energy density, it has to be highly compressed at high pressures (from 350 to 700 bar) to be packed into a tank in sufficient quantities to power a car.  Another difficulty lies in transport, in other words, how to carry hydrogen to the refueling stations to supply traveling cars.

3 - The battery-powered electric motor is now the most efficient system because it converts 80% of the electricity in the battery into energy. What’s more, it is currently cheaper to charge an electric car than to refill on hydrogen.

Yeah, that is what the current status is.
But I know that we can solve a lot of things if we really want to.
But they don't earn anything from air and solar power, so you can see why not everybody is pushing this to where it should be.
And when we have an abundance in solar energy (more than we can use) it is not a problem to lose 50% even with the conversion.
Storing it, is a challenge (at least under pressure) but that is also solvable. BMW is making a fuel cell for this.
But yeah, there are hurdles.

But you are right, these are all hurdles that can be overcome.  Germany is currently leading in the building out of pipelines to distribute liquid hydrogen for car fuel.

You're exactly right about that.  Maybe the energy industry will make this a priority and get this initiative moving.

Very true.  Unfortunately, it is a real shame that only money motivates most corporations.  There is a bit of truth to the saying "Money is the root of all evil".
