Often I find that my flight is broken up into several videos and I am unable to play the last video in the series.  Instead I get a message saying  

"This file isn't playable. That might be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect, or the file is corrupt."

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Are you stopping recording before turning the drone off?

No.  Is that what causes the problem?

Yes. That's a common reason for unplayable files. It should be on the list of possible causes in the error message.

Yes. Fire up the drone, take a short video, stop recording and that should fix it. Just like burning a CD, the files have to be closed.

Can I fix a file that I didn't previously close by doing that (firing up the drone taking a new file and closing the new file)?

Yes, you should be able to.

Just a reminder to kindly please do not to forget to hit the record stop button on the DJI Fly application before turning off the DJI Drone for your filmed videos to be saved properly on your DJI drone's microSD card . This is a very common problem and is easily fixed with the workaround described above.

If only I had read that before I spent hours in "conversation" with "support" who had many ides all technical and or expensive - new computer, new mother board, different video apps, codecs......  The I discovered for myself your easy answer!
