The Final Lock,  Heybridge Basin, Essex.

The final lock on a recent river walk I did.  Its a 21 mile walk from the coast into the local city of Chelmsford following the river Chelmer.   The walk was completed in sections so it was effectively done twice.

The lock to nowhere

The lock lets the boats in and out of the sea,  although it was originally built to allow goods to be offloaded and sent into the nearby city.

Its an old area,  you've got the sea,  the river,  a lake and then more sea.

I probably wont be back there for a while,   but when I do I will be going to the huts from the other day so should be able to get a tide in shot.

Very neat to see the locks holding back the water with nothing but mud on the other side.

You're welcome.  It is quite interesting how locks actually work.  I've been through the locks in the Panama Canal a few times but never paid a lot of attention to how they actually function.  I do remember that it raised the ship about 26 meters.

Wow,   26 metres is some lift,    although I seem tl recall the Panama Canal pumps the water into the section to lift the boats.

Actually it is controlled by gravity flow of the water or at least it was the last time I went through the Miraflores Lake lock.

There are several locks at that canal.  Could be one of them pumps the water in.
