Well, it was old (the building) and outdated and they could earn a lot more by making something new.

Seems you and DAFlys are both really good at DIY projects.  Growing up on a farm I used to be quite handy with repairing things.  Unfortunately, over the many years of college followed by law school and then many years of poring over law books and case studies I kind of lost my DIY skills. I still dabble in small repairs but that is the extent of it.

I always got a kick out of my grandson when he asked what music I listened to on YT or what video games I liked growing up.  I had to burst his bubble and tell him we didn't have video games when I was growing up except maybe Pong and YT wasn't even in existence.  He said that had to be hard and asked what we did with our free time.  Gave me a good chuckle I had to explain that there was no free time growing up on a farm.  Up before daylight doing chores, then quick breakfast and head to school.  After school back to doing chores and then dinner.  Homework, shower and then bed long after the sun went down.  He was stunned and didn't know what to say or ask after that.

Just finished helping our oldest with a math exam she has to take again (after failing miserably).
Man, that is hard stuff.
We have been working on it for 4 evenings now.

I hear you on that.  My youngest grandson is already seeing basic algebra problems in 4th grade math.  I don't remember having algebra until middle school.
