Hi, I have the old style controller, the one that takes 4x AA batteries.  On the bottom there is a usb port, but as far as I can tell this is not mentioned in the on-line maual.  What does it do.

That is for upgrading the DJI software on the Tx.

When I plugged it in it was not detected - so I thought that all the upgrading was done via the phantoms connection.  I'll have another go

Just tried again, the PT2 software does not detect the controller. So either I am doing something wrong or thats not what its for.

Did you have the controller turned on?  Do you have the DJI program installed on your computer and if you have windows program on your computer, did you also download the windows drivers from the DJI website?  The USB port is the only way you do your calibrations and get the program updates from DJI.
Download the DJI manual and read that DJI Autumn provided here.

Try looking at page 47 of the latest manual, "Using the Phantom RC Assistant"
You need the RC assistant software and if you are using a Windows PC, the WIN drivers.

DJI-Autumn;-) Thanks for the link - I understand a little now.  One question though - what is the DR16 for and why would I want one ?

johnwarr I downloaded the manual just 3 days ago.  The version I have is 1.6 October 2014.  Page 47 is talking about the camera & ISO. Page 8 talks about the controller and identifies all the parts of it.  The USB port is not mentioned.

Its sorted now, thanks you you fine chaps !!

open this part of the manual. It explains DT-7 and DR-16

This is for the DT7&DR16 2.4G RC System User Manual.  The 5.8g would be similar if that is what you have.

I have read that, all I can gleam is that its a 16 channel receiver  but does not go in to what its for and why I would want one.  It seems to say its for naza, but as we have naza built in I don't see why we need it.  I don't think I am grasping this concept.

Without the DR16 receiver, how would you fly it if you could not get they control movements to the Phantom?  It's the communication link between your controller and the Phantom.

Hi Gerry - I don't know enough.  This DR16 is it in the phantom or do you connect it to the controller ?  I thought it was an add on to the controller - but now i think it might be much smaller that I originally thought and it is the receiver for the drone.  Is this correct ?

It is built into the controller I think.  I haven't had the controller apart.  It is all part of the system.

Right I see, I thought it was an add on or something.  Makes sense now.
