Weeks go by and firmware updates are no longer talked about. There's news about that?

Nobody (that can talk about this) knows until it is there.
Very very sometimes, they announce an update before it is there.
(I only remember specific cases where there were major bugs and they told those would be addressed ASAP)

I hope they are not abandoning the DJI AVATA.

I have no doubt a firmware update is in the works.  However, only DJI knows when it will be released.
