Close to the 'other' image I shared from the Eendracht (which is behind me).
We are looking in the direction of Wapenveld and this is the same canal that runs next to the 2 factories I shared.

Nice perspective into the distance. Does the canal get much use?  It looks very clean.

Nope.
But they recently cleaned it up (some years ago) since it was heavily polluted.
And they had wild plans on reopening it.
But that got very expensive very quickly, so they abandoned that.

They are using it for paddling and you can rent canoes here.

No-one would want to paddle in the canals over here - they're full of thick mud on the bottom.
But you do see canoeists from time to time.

That was the same here.
It was getting so shallow that you would touch the bottom continuously.

No, the highway was built in 73 and back then they apparently did not feel this was needed, as nobody used the canal anymore.
The same as that they did not feel anyone would be interested in using the railway anymore and they just removed a part where the highway crossed, which is a shame, as it would have been a good alternative these days.

Although that would probably mean a lot of (local) taxes to fund for all these nice old (and some new) bridges to get to a working state.
Plus some system to allow for opening and closing.
And TBH, this canal leads to 'nowhere' sort off.
In the past it was ment to transport goods from the river IJssel to Apeldoorn and some factories alongside the river (that were built after the canal)
But there are much better alternatives these days (and no factories anymore).
Both ends of the canal stop at the river IJssel, so not many people will want to take this 'd-tour' when they are on holiday, as there is not that much to do at the canal.
So the costs would probably be way too high to be justified.
But some dreamers have been talking about this a long long time.

I think this is quite common (unfortunately).
With new developments and people believing in it, it is quite easy to get lost in removing the old.
