WOW! That smart controller is like $800? I might be off my rocker but I was expecting something less than half that price. Bummer

The RC is $300, the RC Pro(the BEST) is $1200.

I think the Smart Controller is now discontinued, so the RC Pro or it's sibling the RC are your best bets. You can still find old stock of SC on eBay or other online stores. Best value for a controller now that the A2S is compatible is the RC!!

I guess I meat the RC, I looked at 2 kits with and w/o an included RC, which is where I got my numbers, so I  suppose it makes sense that as  a stand alone sale it's even more.

Yup. It is expensive.
But you don't need a phone.
So that shaves off some money.

Kind of, but I already have a dedicated phone. I was very surprised at the price of the RC Pro, I expected maybe $400.

The reason you get this RC is that you don't need to get a second phone.
So you have to take that into account as well.
Otherwise you can better buy the regular controller

But most people have several old phones kicking around that they could use. That said I love my DJI RC

Possibly. But all I'm saying is that you have to include an android phone in the price of the Smart RC.
Because that is what is in there.
If you don't need that, there is the regular RC, which is cheaper
