So, I eventually did a little focus test.
Using the same settings on the same tripod at the same place.
The contenders:
Pocket 2
Mini 2
Action 3
All at maximum zoom
Not very scientific, I know
but presented here for your D light
no expense spared! all star cast
TADAH!

In my view I would rank the focus of these shots in this order

Thanks Droffarc.  Guess my eyes aren't so bad after all.  

After reading issues about Action 3 focus issues I went with the GoPro 11.  I've always had great luck with GoPros and a lot of the accessories are interchangeable.

Wonder what happened to the moderators? They used to chirp in from time to time - maybe they have been sworn to secrecy.
What DJI shoud do is find a screw on lens like a filter (some say a +2 reader lense works) and as a gesture of thanks for buying our product, and having faith in our company, send each owner this lense.
There is no way I am going to undertake the hassle and expense of sending the camera back for replacement.
OR
supply those who bought the product with a gopro 11 and admit defeat.
Still, I am happy with what I got, although this morning I was very unhappy - I got out to the site and mimo refused to connect to the Action 3 (it connected to the pocket 2 without a whimper)
I eventually found the somehow the wifi had changed from 2.5 to 5

Mini 2 does seem to be better overall.

Dunno, at set up I set mine to 2.5, same as mini2.
