What is it for

its a cage... same thing as the one it ships with... only its made of alloy and all ports/batteries are accessible (don't need to remove from cage to change the battery).

There are also 1/4 threads and a cold shoe mount.

you can ad an extra smallrig cold shoe

Nice case,  whats the weight like.  

Small rig make great accessories for cameras.

no not really... its an individual thing and not for others to decide

Great for attaching a directional mic actually. The audio on the A3 can be massively improved with a little mic on top and sounds a lot better than those cheap lavs that so many use.
Only thing is though that the fov is so wide that the mic needs to be really small or video in 4k and cut in for 1080.
