Build-you-own might have been on the cards for me 10-15 years ago. But no longer.

It was the same with Amateur Radio. So many ready-made black boxes that DIY became less attractive.

I have a small ham radio for listening to,   it's multi purpose so I can also tune into the planes with it coming in to land,  but on the ham from there is very little activity.

That will be a General Coverage receiver from VHF and up, I expect?
Ham  is between 144 and 146 Mhz VHF, and 432 and 440Mhz UHF being the main segments.
There are other segments too reaching into the Ghz bands, but activity there is low due to the short distances achievable under normal conditions.

Much cheaper than that,  it's a Baofeng.     I only got it really to replace the radio a pilot friend gave me when the battery packed up.  It was cheaper to get this than get a new battery.


I did try to listen in on the local repeaters but Im not sure im getting the whole CTCSS code thing right.
