Just a quick test yesterday. Switching to GPS rescue with the new "landing" function of Betaflight 4.4. Gotta say: it does work but it gives you a fright, takes quite some time and is somewhat accurate, maybe 2-4 m from take off with maybe 8 sats locked. But much better than before.
Used an updated vista with the Goggles 2.

Does the new RTH works without the magnetometer? My drone has GPS only.

I don't seem to have a magnetometer, at least it's not checked in Betaflight and it does work...

Well, one might think "never change a running system" but I wanted to try it. Will fly it a few weeks and then maybe upgrade the others...

I have never used the auto features on DJI drones myself.

That was a bit of a scary test.  The landing sounded like a thud.  Maybe 4.3 is the way to go vice 4.4

Yes, pretty fast but a big improvement to earlier versions.

It was.
But you're wrong there. This is a big improvement to 4.3. There the quad came home and expected you to take over once you could fly it line of sight or you could regain signal. If you didn't take over it just crashed into the ground without any attempt at "landing". Much as I wish I would never make a test of "landing" with gps rescue in 4.3... A broken arm would be the minimum I expect.

Ah ok.   So i guess if you had to use it you aim to regain connection as it got close.

Yes. And as it's not very exact and not soft at landing I'd try to regain control before landing in the new version as well.

I stand corrected, 4.4 is for sure the way to go.

Yes but even in 4.4 you'd definitely want to regain control and land yourself...

I suppose you have to be careful where you have it turned on too.,  flying through obstacles you may just want it to land and not rth.

That‘s true.
I never think about that with a DJI drone. With this one you‘d have to hook it up to a computer so it‘s not practical at all.
In fpv outside DJI it‘s really just a better chance of getting the quad back at all. And it helps to have an arrow pointing roughly home. I once totally lost sense of where I was and had to fly by sound (!) to get home with a drone without gps…

Thats really inconvenient. Id assume there was a switch you could flick to activate that.

Sounds like the only way to get the quad back safely.

Flying by sound is quite the remarkable feat.

And terrifying. But once I got closer I recognized the place I needed to go. A forest isn't the easiest to navigate ;-)

You definitely made the best of a bad situation.
