I havent flown for several months.
Now I'm parked in my caravan beside a lovely lake and want to fly my drone.
Never needed to log in before but now I have to.  When did this new restriction come into effect?

"When did this new restriction come into effect?"

Nearly 24 months... And it is a restriction in some parts of the world, but in Australia, with our network coverage, it is called a crippling feature...

Enjoy your drone, if you can...

I am bumping this thread to comment on my experience with DJI's account policies. Very briefly - DJI's products and policies are not designed with users' needs or best interests in mind, and I will be purchasing drones from their competitors.

For those who want more detail...

I've had the opportunity to use a small fleet of DJI drones owned by my employer. The account login process has caused a lot of problems which are familiar to those who read this forum. Some information was lost by the previous owner and DJI has chosen to not be very helpful in recovering usability. Let me emphasize the word 'chosen' here. DJI could have designed things differently and could be more responsive when problems like this develop. This forum and the internet in general is full of stories of people losing account information for one reason or another. DJI's standard response seems to consist of boilerplate messages in which they simply re-state their policies, followed by information which is already known (chiefly, without the email addresses used to create accounts, nothing will be done). This is unhelpful and frankly patronizing, yet it happens over and over again. This very thread has several of DJI's non-answer responses.

There have been instances, also described in detail many times before, of the drones being taken somewhere out of internet coverage only to find them unusable because of a required update. Again, this is a policy of DJI's choosing. The rationalization is always flight safety, which rings untrue.

In the United States at least, there are now very clear regulations on drone flight. An FAA license is needed for commercial operations and even purely recreational pilots are expected to obtain some training, in the form of the TRUST Exam. It can now reasonably be assumed that safety is the pilot's responsibility, in terms of both regulation and physical well being. It is not necessary to lock down functionality of owned products to ensure flight safety - that burden has been transferred to individual remote pilots. It's certainly not desirable considering the many failures of DJI equipment to accomplish their basic operational function for lack of an internet connection.

I won't speculate on DJI's true reasons for denying basic functionality to customers after purchase. But let's be clear that this is precisely what DJI is doing. Customers purchase expensive equipment, reasonably expect to utilize it at times and places of their choosing, only to find they must satisfy the whims of a far off company. When seeking help, these customers are patronized and essentially told nothing can be done because no substantive changes have been forthcoming.

At my urging, my company will be phasing out all DJI equipment. We have identified products from other manufacturers that will meet our needs going forward and I suggest others do the same. However, this post is not merely a complaint - this is an opportunity for DJI to change. I'll check in every so often on these forums to see if the problems I've described persist, and if DJI does indeed learn and improve. If real change to their products does take place, and users are put back in full control of their purchased property, my employer and I may reconsider DJI products in the future. But for now, we are done with their heavy-handedness, mistrust and condescending attitude toward customers.

Hi, harpoon71. Thank you for reaching out and we're sorry for the inconvenience. The application has been programmed to be logged out automatically after three months, and re-login is required. You can still take off without logging in however, there will be limited height and distance. Before going to the remote area, it is highly suggested to open the DJI Fly first to check if it needs to be logged in. Thank you for your kind understanding.

It's not just an inconvenience.  I wasn't informed of this new "feature".  I wasted a weekend getaway to a beautiful part of Utah, hours from a cell signal.  A crass stunt to gather direct marketing info.  No, I cannot recreate this weekend. Absolutely infuriating.

You BET it is.   I just missed a great shot because of this.   It is a total BS requirement if you ask me.   VERY VERY unhappy with DJI at this point.

Logging in won't ever be an option for me so I have accepted that DJI drones have a limitation of 50 meters distance and 30 meters altitude. I have other drones that can easily beat that.

So your saying if I log in when I leave home even if I go to areas without phone / internet services it won’t ask me to log in and restrict my fly range etc ?

Hi Dean Martin,

Thank you for reaching out. yes correct, Internet connection is not required during flying instead it is recommended to set your mobile device in "Airplane mode" to avoid any interference when flying the unit. Make sure to finalize the unlocking request and all your firmware and maps are updated before going to a location without an internet connection.

I hope this information has helped to clarify your inquiries. If you have any other questions, kindly let us know. Thank You!

That's the only way to look at DJI drones, especially on this continent...

Such a pity that this company is so detached from reality...

I had never heard of this situation before and I’ve been flying DJI drones for the last year. I went out today to fly my Air 3S for the second time since owning it and this issue happened to me. I got NO Advance Warning or notification saying I needed to log in or anything else alerting me that I needed to log in. I just flew my Air 3S yesterday and had no issue, now today trying to fly for the second time owning this drone and can’t use it.
I’m a little over an hour away from home so there no way I’ll be able to drive back out to the location I traveled to today. Hopefully when I arrive home I won’t have any issue logging in like plenty of others have experienced. If I have any issues logging in once I’m home I’ll def come back and report the issue. Sure wish I would have known about this situation. I’m still SMH mostly because I just flew this new drone for the first time yesterday and now today I can’t.

I have recommended to DJI for the past 18 months, to put a label on their boxes to let the customers know about this limitation before they purchase the drones...

But they are seriously concern that it would affect their sales... So they opted to keep this, the best secret in town, instead...
