5.8Ghz works better facing you.

TLDR:  I was testing 2.4/5.8Ghz on the way outward, line of sight, to 5km, and I found that 5.8Ghz would not die (2-3 bars), but 2.4Ghz gave me 4-5 bars. Then I had to return home, and found 2.4Ghz was 3 bars. I tested 5.8Ghz and found 5 bars.

After a phenomenal CE range test, out to near the limits of a Plus battery, it occurred to me that I did not know whether I was in 2.4Ghz. So I replicated the route today, thinking the 5.8GHz would die, long before the standard battery. Alas, annoyingly, it hung on. This could mean that when you rotate a Mini 3 out at max range, part of the reason the transmission breaks up so much, is switching between the bands. I had assumed that it would stay on 2.4, when out of range of 5.8, but it may never be out of range of 5.8

That is my experience as well.  Manually stay in 5.8

Very interesting!
I use the DJI RC Pro for control and will definitely try it out to see if there are actually any further improvements...

Dont switch to 5.8 though, the US 5.8 is the same power as their 2.4, where as our 5.8 is far lass than our 2.4, unless of course you have FCC enabled...

Everybody swears blind that Australia is on CE, but in my radio-quiet area, line of sight, I'm getting results comparable with the FCC stunts. This afternoon, I turned the drone around at 6500m, on the top of a 250m hill, and the 5.8 was the same 2-3 bars as 2.4. My 2.4 has gone out to 9000 on one route, and I still wasn't really pushing it - no video breakup, or red bars. In comparison with my Mini 2 with obstructions from 50-100m of tree tops, the Mini 3 can't match the paths I took, so it's not magically better than the Mini 2. Guys in Australia are moaning about short distances, just as much as everybody else. There's something about ocusync 3 doing well in line of sight situations, which are not very normal.

This has been known for a good while now, but its not limited to 5.8, 2.4 is also the same when facing away, my opinion is that the ptich going forwards is tilting the arms upwards thus in turn directing the antennas at an upwards angle and we know what that means, so when in reverse, the antennas are pointing at an angle downwards, you will also find that if you just crawl at no more than 4kph forwards the signal is also stronger than at full speed. This angle tilt is also why many have a poor range when comparing to the Mini 2 for example, the tilt means that the RC to drone alignment needs to be pretty much spot on especially the further away you get.

No worries, if youre using the RC Pro, just make sure its switching to 2.4 automatically when the signal is getting weak.

The range is most impacted by interfering signals in the area you are flying.  You reason you could have had better 5.8 Ghz performance is because your location has other 2.4 Ghz radio traffic causing BLER forcing more error corrections hence worst performance.

There's no interference here, unless it's from my phone. There is a mobile tower 8km behind me, but that's doing 700-1000Mhz. It may have an effect. I did another test, more toward the tower, and turned the drone at 6500m, and expected great 5.8GHz, but it was the same. So, unfortunately, the better 5.8Ghz may only happen around 4000-5500m. After this, it just naturally dies out. This area is fairly radio-quiet, and I have connected with a Huawei hotspot at 750m. But I suppose, a lot more pointless testing to be done.
