Looking for advice on which editing program to use.  I use my laptop to store all the videos.  I want a program that I can cut videos to add them together with good transition options, as well as to add audio via songs.  Any advice?

I was looking at all kind of programs. I dident want some "pay each month" program.
I landed on PowerDirector 13.
They got different packs, some with foto and sound editing software.
Check it out:

I use Premiere Pro CC. But that is a little not he expensive side. I have not used it, but I know a lot of folks are using the scaled back version, Premiere Elements. I thinks it's like $70 U.S., and will handle all of what you describe.

I have tried a bunch of software but actually do best with Premiere Pro.

Visit  adobe.com and try it for free for 30 days. Lots of great tutorials for editing video... including video from Phantom 3.

After that, it costs $20 per month.

I actually use the AVS software suite for audio/video/photo editing.  VERY reasonably priced and their software is constantly getting improvement updates.   Not sure if they can handle 4k, but for 1080P it works great.

They are currently having a summer Special....US $59 for 11 programs with free lifetime updates and free support.

I edited this video with gopro studio (free). I have used windows movie maker in the past, but it doesn't come out as clear as gopro studio. I have also tried Cyberlink, but I have never gotten it to work. Probably just user error. There are a ton of tutorials on youtube for gopro studio. It takes a little bit of getting used to if you have only used movie maker, but after a few times, it gets easier.

Well there is GoPro studio which is ok not a lot of features'

Davinci Resolve is a very powerful editor, needs a good graphics card, but it is free and just as powerful as Premiere Pro.

I use Premiere Pro and Resolve. Been using Resolve more and more, some tutorials on youtube.

Also take a look at Sony Vegas Movie Studio, very powerful also can be bought quite cheap for older versions and then can upgrade for reasonable cost.

If you're a professional and demand the very best, you won't find anything for free. There are a few that are not that expensive and will do a pretty good job for you.

If you're NOT a professional and don't plan to spend hours and hours on your computer editing video, GoPro Studio is free and will probably do just about everything you'll need.

Just FYI...you may have missed my post above.  There is a suite of a 11 (yes, ELEVEN) different editing type programs from AVS software that you can get for $59 right now. (that's like $5 per program)

You can also try it before you buy it, so you could just go to the avs4you.com link above and download the video editing software and see how you like it.

I think the programs are quite good and an extremely reasonable price for the entire suite.

The AVS4YOU links I gave above doesn't seem to support this format....SORRY!

Specifically, the AVS VIDEO EDITOR supports:

Manage Various Video Formats
AVS Video Editor supports all key video formats. Edit & save video files in AVI, VOB, MP4, DVD, WMV, 3GP, MOV, MKV, H.263/H.264 codecs, etc. See a full list of supported video formats

You can buy older version of Adobe Premier from Ebay, it does an outstanding job but can take some time to learn.

I use Premier Elements on several computers (under $100_ and it works pretty well, nice set of transitions and the ability to add multiple soundtracks, also lots of info on how to use it.   If you go Mac, Final Cut Pro.

Oh, one important hint no matter what program you use - add as much memory as you can afford to your system, and a solid state drive if you don't already have one.

I'm on a Windows platform and do a lot of video production... I use the Adobe suite because of the integration with its other softwares (After Effects, Photoshop, etc)..... so Premiere is my mainstay. But for mid-level work without breaking the bank (too badly), and a nice intuitive interface and workflow.... check Sony Vegas.

It all boils down to what you want to accomplish with your footage... cuts-only, add a soundtrack, voice-over, animate stills? Most softwares have trial demos..... TRY THEM! It;s the best way to determine what is best for you.

You can edit in any of the popular programs and then use Handbrake (free) to export it in H265.

Hi Geebax.

I can't seem to get handbrake to work.
I have a big modern system so power isn't the problem but it just output's tiny files for some reason.

I use Wondershare Filmora .... cheap and gets the job done.  Also I found out they're working on adding 4k output capabilities very soon.  Meantime you can still import your 4k video and do all the chopping/edits you want without bogging down ur system like the more complex programs out there.  Nice middle ground

What makes Premier from Adobe better than Photoshop (it's twice as expensive at $20/mo vs $10)?
EDIT:  I see, Premier Pro is completely about video footage and is actually super nice.  Photoshop is mostly about images but does have video portions available.  For me, Photoshop seems like it would do the trick but I totally see why some of you die-hard editors prefer Permier now.

EDIT ...

My personal advice - find something simple, really simple. It might be free or it might just be relatively inexpensive. Try it for a while. If you don't like it, move on to something else. If you think it's too limiting, same rule - move on to something else.

Avoid, if at all possible, jumping into something that an expert says is really good - it will do this and that and those and them and you'll love it, you can make Gone With the Wind look like a short subject, etc.

And you'll get so lost in the details!

There is a great deal of video editing that can be done with simple tools - iMovie, Movie Maker, GoPro Studio. You may well discover that you don't want to get up to your neck with a complex program. Later, when you've got some experience under your belt, you may decide you *must* graduate to something either better, more powerful or both.

Don't buy a Ferrari when you're not yet sure how to drive the Chevrolet!

I have used Pinnacle Studio 18.  It's cheap and easy to use.  I have just picked up a copy of Powerdirector 13.  It is supposedly the best "cheap" editing software.  So far, it seems very capable and has far more templates for titles and transitions than Pinnacle Studio.  Both are roughly the same price range.  $40 to $80ish depending on the version you buy.
