During a brief stopover in this historic city, I noticed a building which, although architecurally conforming with its surroundings, was clearly an addition several centuries later.

Feels very French architecture to me.  Beyond the obvious guess of Paris I have no idea.    And you're probably leading me on a goose chase.

I do love the architectural design of the building.    My initial impression would have been somewhere in France but I see that was not the location from DAFly's guess.

Exactly so. Centuries ago, there would have been a gap between Baliol and St Johns. But in the years that followed several buildings must have been added, filling the space. The one in my pic looks the most recent.

lol.  I think all has become clear on that front now.   Last place I want to go back to.  I really didnt like the place at all.  Although that was pre 9/11 and Ive been told its changed a lot since.

Very few colleges, if any others, dating back to the 13th century are still around.  Balliol appears to be an impressive "think tank" for people of exceptional potential go to study.
