Here is a news article about a guy who was thrown in jail for taking out a drone at the beach.

I actually find some humor in this.  Just because there is a drone flying over doesn't mean he's doing video.
I shoot primarily stills, I dislike idiots that assume I want to photograph/video them.  Hey man on the beach,
are you really that good looking? The UT story also says the drone was flying over them when the guy hurled his shirt at the drone, aprox. 6 feet.  The tv version
talking to the pilot said he was landing.  Mr. drone pilot, if you're on the forum tell us the truth.  Were you that close
or landing?  If you were that close to them you deserve to get knocked down....  Safety first.

It's our job to educate these people about what quad copters or drones if that's what they want to call them that, then fine.  Actually... Not all of them have a camera on board for instance.  Nonetheless if you're going to fly in a public area and it's OK to fly there, then it is a public domain and these people have no right as to the pictures being taken from said drone or quad copter if you will.   It is no different as if it was a picture being taken from somebody's phone or their very own camera.  What all of us need to do is call the news organizations in your local area and advise them that they are reporting the news incorrectly.   All of these news organizations are reporting one-sided stories that are setting our hobby up for a fail. I think it's important that you call these news organizations with a nice demeanor and educate them on with the correct laws are, and demamand that they inform the public both sides and how most of us quad pilots follow the rules. Then hopfulley the public can stop this mad hatred towards drones for quad copters whatever you want to call them. All of these news organizations are supposed to report the news fairly and accurately which they are not doing that,  if as many people that can were to call the news organizations and let them know what they're doing is incorrect it may have an impact. Also, It would not hurt to ask for permission of the people near you before you fly or at least advise the people that you planning on flying and what your rights are.  But we have to remember to do this in a kind way that doesn't cause conflict  We have to take a stand, but we have to do it intelligently!

I fly in a lot of public locations and every time I do, I ask the people around me if it's OK and if they be offended if I was to fly and take some pictures that they may end up in unintentionally much like a regular camera.  I've had some people concern thinking that it was against the law but once I explained it to them everything is fine and what law is in a public domain they understand and are okay with me flying my P3 it without any further issue.  In fact I think that they become interested in the hobby and like the idea of getting one for themselves. It all comes down to attitude and how you position the question and the ability to educate them. Honey vs vinegar.

COMPLETELY agree with this post and I've been harping that point for awhile.  A camera is a camera and will capture stills (and many nowadays video, too) and get footage of anyone and everyone in public.   I will, however, admit that flying too low (which isn't clear exactly how low he was in this article) is a stupid act over people.

You can have no expectation to privacy in a public area simple as that.

I met the crazy lady of our street the other day. After having terrific experiences meeting my neighbors for the last several weeks (I practice on the street, which is pretty quiet), one old lady began yelling that 'We don't allow that in our neighborhood, STOP IT, it's a nuisance, it's so noisy!' She kept it up, walking slowly away. Does every neighborhood have one of these? Is it a neighborhood requirement?

Today i went to the river to take some shots, there were some canoeists up river, which is where i wanted to go. Normally i would have informed them and asked if they would mind but they were too far to hear me. So i just went down river instead, in case they would be somehow bothered by its presence. i did my shots and then started coming back. Upon descent i noticed 2 other kayakers were travelling down river more or less on the same path as my p3. so i stopped at around 45' from the water surface to let them pass so i could then bring it in thru the trees. The lady of the house went by and then the husband, when he got under the p3 45' down he yelled " get that drone away from me". at which time i left the p3 hovering and went to the edge of the river and told him that i have as much right being by the river on public property and that there is absolutely no difference between filming using a standard video camera or a camera attached to a quad-copter. i asked him if he thought there was a difference and he said "yes there is you are invading my privacy". Up to that point i was cordial in the way i spoke to him but since he was not, i changed my demeanor and informed him that he did and does not have a right to privacy in a public place, unless he had just purchased the ....... river and if he had he better go back and purchase the airways above it too. he told me that he was going to get out of his kayak and throw his oar at the p3 and smash it to ...... i told him that i would lower it some more so he could do it with ease as i didnt think his fat ass could throw the oar that high. i also told him that he was welcome to use my phone to call the local PD if he felt his rights were violated. he never moved an inch nor took my offer to use the cell phone. i asked him to move along so i could bring the quad down as i didnt want to get too close for safety reasons. he decided he was not going to move. at which time i moved the quad slightly up river and brought it down to about 6' high walked in to the river and hand caught it, turned it off and gave him a smile and told him to go get better educated on his rights so that he does not infringe on mine.
to my dismay he never got out of the kayak, just sat there and sulked!!
so here we are in a leading nation in the world and some of our people seem not to have any common decency or knowledge. I bet if we went to a third world country we would not have as many problems with people as we do here. And in my opinion the reason for this, is:
here everyone has come to believe that they have a right to ...... your rights!!
third world countries, since the majority dont have many rights, they dont trample on yours!

now whats wrong with that picture?

Wow, that guy really pissed you off!  In all seriousness, what a flipping idiot.  Apparently, like a lot of people, his right to whatever he decides he wants at the moment is more important than your rights.

Can't fix stupid.

You know... if Apple were to come out with a new iPhone that you could detach the corner of it and through it in the air then it would fly to any direction you sent it to in order to take pictures or video, everyone would think that it was cool and more than likely not flip out that it was a drone.   Hmmmm I wonder.

I would have told him.....LOOK FAT ASS, you get that kayak out of the water, your spying on people ...

Nah, his wife's face when I walked into the river and caught the p3, together with the look on his own face thinking he was gonna get it, was enough.

Eventually there'll be so many feral government drones and local government drones and law enforcement drones flying around that this will be moot.
I think within 5 years people will be forced to accept them.   It's still new.   People always react this way to new things.
I'm fairly certain we'll have Police and law enforement drones overhead in the near future most of the time.   It's just the way things are going.

Till then, stand your ground.   There's a time for gentle persuasion and education and then there's a time for telling fat ass to eat lard.

Yeah. No one would be game (or allowed) to even suggest that an Apple drone was unacceptable.

I don't know how many of you can remember what it was like when mobile (cellular) phones first started appearing (late 80's early 1990s) and the attention they got along with the intense ignorance. Back then, anyone who had one was labelled a "wanker" with a "wanker phone" (at least in Australia). Ignorant people would say ignorant things like, "How important does he think he is that he needs to make or take calls from anywhere?" Now, of course, EVERYONE has one, even kids. The same will transpire with drones. But until then, idiots will see them as something sinister and "scary".

Design and sales. I have been but I can't post anything yet.  My company's lawyers are nervios about the publicity with quads.  So we are waiting for either the FAA's supposedly new rulings to be released in September or I get my part 333, whichever comes first.
