QUESTION, is there a flight log or GPS location recorded on my tablet?  I've searched the forum and googled but don't find this answer anywere.

I was out flying late this afternoon and flew much further than I should have.  I was at 13,500' away at 400' altitude when I lost radio contact.  After nervously awaiting, regained signal and RTH message displayed.  Relief!  But as the aircraft was on it's way back, I start getting nervous again as it seems the flight speed isn't enough to get home.  Battery 30%, 25% .. and eventually 10 ... Then the dreaded message - LANDING - with a displayed distance of about 2500'.  Then I lost contact when it reached a height of 100', so I think it might have crashed.  The last image showed that it was over a farm crop.  Bad news is a severe thunderstom moved in just a short while later and we're expecting heavy wind and rain.
Help???

Thanks for your help Jim!
There's no doubt the file is incomplete for this flight, but I did see a single connection lost marker, so at least I have a better idea what direction to look.  I'll keep you posted.

Not sure this happened in your case, but I just noticed this week that if your app crashes and restarts mid-flight, you will lose the 1st part of your data log.....basically, you will only have a log from when it restarted.

It was a bummer in my case b/c I was actually testing distance (very nice calm day) and wanted a record of the flight and I lost it...   Just means I'll need to fly my copter again another day to get the record

I'm not sure what happened to the flight record, but it clearly didn't save the flight as it had in the past.  I did save the last image and have an idea what the area looks like, but so far after hours of looking at Google Earth, I'm not convinced I have a good starting point to look.

Thanks jayhkr.  I was sick to my stomach for sure!  A little @#$%, some cold sweat, disbelief ... now after a few hours of google earth, I'm still not convinced that last picture gave me enough to go on.  My wife is supportive and convinced we'll find it, but I guess we'll know in the morning.

Unfortunately, this won't help you now, unless you were recording video AND you had this feature enabled, but GPS location data can be stored.

There is an option in the DJI Go App...in the video settings that is called "VIDEO CAPTION" that you can turn on or off.  When this is ON, it captures data along with your video...one of these is GPS location.  It saves another file along with your MOV or MP4 file with the extension SRT.

Here is a snippet of one of these SRT files....they are text readable...AND, some video players know how to display this at the same time your video is running (on Android, I use MX Player to play my videos and it'll automatically pull this SRT data onto my video screen why I'm watching....that way you have this data displayed along with your video to know where you are, barometer reading, etc):

Lol you better make that exception, from the picture it's tall woods, I would think you should have went in the general are right after it fell it would still have the strobes on and you would have located it by light at night, but that's too late now I won't think the battery would sustain it that long, if you know someone with a phantom close by its better to search from the sky , otherwise plan on getting a machete and bug spray deepwods repellent and rubber boots as that rain has done a nice muddy situation if it's a wooded area.

I didn't think about the stobes still flashing, and at the time I wasn't very certain about the general location.  I really didn't want to go looking as the storm was already moving in with some pretty serious lightning in the area!  The area isn't wooded, it's actually a cotton crop about 1/2 mile from my house, so I think I have a good chance for recovery.

Perfect!

In addition, I just found out how I can enter these into my handheld Garmin etrex GPS as well.....I can save a waypoint and my GPS'll track me right to it also.   As long as I record video every time I fly, this can be a method to find the last location it was taking video.   I really hope I never need to use this!!

Yes, and I should have known that since I had played with the controls while in an automatic landing just a little while earlier.

GOOD NEWS!!! After searching on Google Earth last night for about 2 hours, I was almost certain that I new where the P3P was, and this morning after a short 5 minute search I found it in good condition in a field of what looked like sage.

Fantastic news.  What a relief you must be feeling.  You said you found it near where you were looking at google earth?  So you were able to use the logs to find the spot where you last lost contact and that was near where you found it?   I keep note of all these FOUND IT scenarios because you never know when you will need them.

Richard,

VERY HAPPY to hear you found it!  I was going to write you and tell you that rain really doesn't hurt it.  I caught my P2 Vision + in a tree once and it POURED on it for over an hour.  I gave up hope and went inside.  Two hours later the rain had stopped and it was still up in the tree blinking!  After another hour I managed to get it down.  I pulled the battery and put the P2 in a big rubbermaid tub with 20lbs of rice and left it there for FOUR DAYS.  Its been flying perfectly fine since.

I now have a P3 and while the built in tracking, etc is pretty good, if you really want peace of mind you can buy a Trackimo really cheap.  I have one and depending on what I'm doing I either attach it to the drone or I leave it in my bag (ie. anti-theft).

Hey Rich! GOOD NEWS! My wife and I just got home from town. I now can tell her that all my time reading and participating in this forum does make a difference!!! Man, I am so happy you found it! Almost like finding a thousand dollar bill stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Did it make it all the way down or free fall a bit? I am figuring that it made it. Was hoping anyways. I can't believe you found it in 5 minutes. That is what I call good search preemptive planning!!!

Tell your wife I appreciate her letting you talk with me last night!

In that little file you helped me with, I found the last time the bird communicated with the controller, which was the radio connection message.   I also knew the distance from home when it landed, so that gave me a general idea, plus I had the last image transmitted as it landed.  Google Earth helped me figure out where it was last night, so finding it this morning was pretty simple.

It seems like it landed successfully, although I'm sure there was some stress on the motors when it landed in the field, stopping the props prematurely.

I let it dry out for a few hours, and put the batter on the charger, which seemed normal.  I'll try flying again later tonight and will let you know how that went.

spheasant1,

Flight logs that are recoded on the tablet.

Connect your tablet to your computer (android and PC in this case).
Direct your browser to HealthyDrones.com
Click the Browse button on the page and upload your flight file.  Click the drive which is your tablet, follow to tablet, DJI, dji.pilot, then DJI_RECORD (or similar file), and finally the file you want to see the flight path.

It will be easier if you will change the view to "details."

Then click upload.  When the web page finishes, it should show you your complete flight path.

Only thanks to Jim was I able to share this great information!

I'm not surprised at the comments on this thread with everyone showing concerned for a fellow DJI pilot.  I do not like to see or hear of any pilot's misfortune.  As you said you flew much farther then you should have.  You were fortunate and best of luck to you with future flights.
